Hamburg's Groß-Sand Hospital to Close Permanently by June 2023
Groß-Sand Hospital in Hamburg will close its doors for good by June 30, 2023. The Archdiocese of Hamburg, which owns the facility, confirmed the decision after months of failed negotiations. Over 350 staff have already received termination notices, leaving the future of local healthcare uncertain. The hospital's decline began last summer when its emergency department and surgical unit shut down. Since then, talks between the Archdiocese and Hamburg's Social Affairs Authority have broken down, despite an earlier agreement on the purchase price. The SPD-led authority suspended confidential negotiations, prompting criticism from the Archdiocese.
Hamburg's red-green coalition had proposed setting up a 'neighbourhood clinic' on the hospital site. However, the Wilhelmsburg Medical Association warned that such a clinic could not replace a fully functioning hospital. SPD health spokesperson Claudia Loss blamed the Archdiocese for the deadlock, calling the situation its responsibility. Financial details about the Archdiocese's assets, including property holdings, remain undisclosed. This lack of transparency has fuelled speculation about the reasons behind the closure.
With the hospital's final closure now set, patients and staff face an uncertain transition. The collapse of negotiations means no immediate replacement for the lost services. Local healthcare providers must now adapt to the gap left by Groß-Sand's shutdown.
