Crime rates in Hamburg’s Harburg district have climbed sharply in early 2023. Official figures show an 18.5% rise compared to the same period last year. Violent offences, thefts, and robberies have all surged in the first three months.
Violent crime cases jumped by 20.2% in the first quarter. Serious offences like rape saw an even steeper increase of 60%. Sexual crimes also rose by 18.6%, with cases climbing from 70 to 83.
Robberies soared by 38.9%, reaching 50 reported incidents. Nearly half of these took place in public areas. Meanwhile, car thefts more than doubled, rising from 22 to 46 cases.
Thefts of mopeds and motorcycles saw the most dramatic spike, increasing by 160%. Bicycle thefts also doubled, leaping from 104 to 209 cases. Car break-ins, though less severe, still grew by 8.5%.
Thomas Meyn, Kriminaldirektor, oversaw the Polizeiinspektion Harburg during this period. Based in Buchholz, he had been in the role for over 100 days by the time the data was reported.
The figures highlight a clear upward trend in crime across Harburg. Thefts, robberies, and violent offences have all seen significant increases in early 2023. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the year progresses.
