Grote continues to promote Hamburg as Olympic city - Hamburg’s Olympic Dreams Return as Fresh Vote Looms in May 2023
Hamburg is preparing for a fresh vote on hosting the Summer Olympics, despite past rejection. Senator Andy Grote insists the city should not miss out on the chance to bid. A referendum in late May 2023 will decide whether Hamburg moves forward with its plans.
The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) is weighing up four possible hosts for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Games. Munich, Berlin, the Rhine-Ruhr region, and Hamburg are all in the running. A decision on which city to back will come by autumn 2026.
The referendum in late May will determine Hamburg’s next steps. If approved, the city will join the race for the DOSB’s final selection. The outcome could shape Hamburg’s future infrastructure and its role in German sports for decades to come.
