Hamburg's Stern Bridge: Greens Propose Unique Tourist Attraction
The Stern bridge in Altona, Hamburg, faces demolition, but local Greens propose a unique solution: transforming parts of it into a tourist attraction. The 'Quietschkurve', a distinctive curve of the bridge, could be repurposed as an observation platform, reminiscent of New York's High Line.
Christian Trede, a Green Party member of the Altona district assembly, and his faction first presented this idea in 2022. The proposed platform could accommodate up to 200 people and would incorporate elements of the former Stern bridge. The idea has gained support from various parties, including SPD, FDP, and Volt, in a recent district assembly meeting.
The project, however, faces challenges. Implementation will take considerable time, and the Hamburg Senate and Altona district office are working to persuade the German Railway to join the project. While the Left Party expressed skepticism, the AfD and CDU voted against the proposal.
The future of the Stern bridge remains uncertain, but the proposal to transform it into an observation platform offers a novel way to preserve a piece of Hamburg's history. The project's success depends on collaboration and support from various parties and the German Railway.
