Hamburg’s Wehner Square reopens after €5.9M revamp with community celebrations
Herbert and Greta Wehner Square in Hamburg’s Harburg district has officially opened after a major renovation. Two senators led the inauguration day, marking the completion of a €5.9 million upgrade to the public space. The event also launched a shop-and-stroll Sunday focused on integration and community spirit.
Work on the square began in October 2022, transforming the area around Harburger Ring. The project included new pedestrian zones, cycling paths, and improved infrastructure. Funding came from multiple sources, such as the cycle route expansion programme, RISE, Hamburg’s Squares initiative, and the city’s Climate Plan.
The inauguration day was organised by the Kulturpalast Foundation and Harburg Civic Centre. Performances by the Hamburg HipHop Academy added to the celebrations. Nearby, the former Karstadt department store remains vacant since its 2020 closure, with its owner, Vivico (part of the Ekkehard Hütten foundation), now exploring future uses for the building. Local groups and potential investors have already shown interest in repurposing the empty site. Discussions are underway, though no firm plans have been announced yet.
The redesigned square now offers better access for pedestrians and cyclists. Its opening coincides with efforts to revive the surrounding area, including the long-empty Karstadt building. Officials hope the upgrades will strengthen Harburg’s role as a vibrant community hub.
