In the Cold: Warm Sleeping Spaces for the Homeless - Hamburg's Winter Shelters Reopen, Offering 700 Beds and Support Services
Hamburg's municipal winter emergency shelters are set to reopen this Saturday, providing vital access for the city's homeless during the cold winter months. The shelters, located in Hammerbrook and Moorfleet, can accommodate up to 700 people and will be open from November to March, between 5:00 PM and 9:30 AM daily.
The shelters offer a range of services to support their residents. These include free beds, meals, washing machines, and lockable storage facilities. Additionally, social counseling services will be available to help individuals navigate their situations. The shelters have two- and three-bed rooms, with separate facilities for women, men, and couples, allocated through a lottery system.
A shuttle service will connect the shelters to the central train station, ensuring easy access for those in need. The lottery for women will take place at the Kemenate day shelter, while men can participate at the Diakonie day shelter. Strict rules are in place, including a ban on alcohol and drugs on-site.
The city has also set up several residential containers with space for around 100 people, open 24/7 throughout the winter. These additional facilities will help to alleviate the pressure on the main shelters. The operators of these containers, known as 'Wohngräbchen', have not been named at this time. The reopening of the shelters is a crucial step in ensuring that Hamburg's homeless population has access to safe, warm accommodation during the cold winter months.
