Hanau Hosts a One-Woman Play Celebrating Germany's Basic Law at 75
A special one-woman performance celebrating Germany's Basic Law will take place in Hanau on 4 March. Titled We, the Basic Law, the free event marks the start of Democracy History Day, a new annual observance under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. This year's edition coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law, bringing public events to over 260 locations nationwide.
The performance will run from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Red Hall of Philippsruhe Palace. Actress Katja Straub will present a scripted interpretation of the Basic Law, directed by Alexander Maser. The play was developed by the Society for the Study of Democracy History and is supported by the Foundation for Sites of German Democracy History.
Admission is free, and no prior registration is required. Funding comes from the Thuringian State Chancellery and the same foundation backing the event. Beyond Hanau, around **259 other cities and regions**—including the Thüringer Landtag, Fürstenfeldbruck, Erlangen, Landshut, and Plauen—will host their own events on **18 March** as part of *Demokratiegeschichtstag 2025*. Each location, designated an *Ort der Demokratiegeschichte*, will commemorate the Basic Law's legacy through talks, exhibitions, and performances.
The initiative aims to make the Basic Law's history accessible to the public through free, open events. With performances like We, the Basic Law and nationwide participation, the 75th anniversary will be marked by a broad programme of civic engagement. Future editions of Democracy History Day will continue annually on 18 March.
