Hanau's Disability Forum Proposes New Officers to Boost Inclusion

Hanau's Disability Forum has put forward new proposals for its team of volunteer disability rights officers. The group aims to strengthen support for people with disabilities across key areas like housing, healthcare, and leisure. Their recommendations will now go to the city council's Social Affairs Committee for consideration.

The forum has suggested reappointing Lieselotte Schaffer and Karl-Heinz Käbisch to their current roles. Schaffer has served as a disability rights officer since November 2019, while Käbisch, who specialises in accessible construction, has held the position since October 2014. A new addition, Horst Henke, is proposed to replace Harald Koch on the team.

The forum regularly meets at Haus am Steinheimer Tor in Hanau's city centre, where they hold office hours for public consultations. Their work covers a broad spectrum of concerns, from obtaining severe disability IDs to improving access in medical practices, sports, and barrier-free housing. Beyond individual cases, the group plans to meet more frequently to develop joint projects that promote inclusion. While the exact number of people helped by the forum's advisory services remains unclear, the group hopes to increase visibility. Their goal is to ensure more residents know about the support available to them.

The proposal will now be reviewed by the Social Affairs Committee before a final decision is made. If approved, the updated team will continue addressing barriers faced by people with disabilities in Hanau. The forum also intends to expand its outreach to better connect with those who need assistance.
