Hanau elects new mayor - Hanau's Mayoral Race Heats Up with Six Candidates Vying for Victory
Hanau's mayoral race is heating up as six candidates compete to replace longtime mayor Claus Kaminsky. The election takes place this Sunday, with around 68,000 residents eligible to cast their votes. For the first time in years, the contest is wide open, with no clear frontrunner before polling begins.
Kaminsky's early departure has left the position vacant, drawing candidates from across the political spectrum. The SPD's Maximilian Bieri and the CDU's Isabelle Hemsley are considered the leading contenders. But they face competition from four others: a Green Party nominee, an FDP representative, and two candidates from smaller factions or running independently.
The field includes five men and one woman. If no candidate secures an absolute majority on Sunday, a runoff will follow on March 29. This election marks a shift from previous years, when major parties dominated more decisively. Voters will choose between established names and fresh challengers. The Greens, Left Party, FDP, and Justice Party have all put forward candidates, making the race more unpredictable than in the past.
The outcome will determine Hanau's next mayor after Kaminsky's exit. A runoff remains possible if no single candidate wins over 50% of the vote this weekend. The result will also show whether traditional parties can hold their ground against growing competition.
