Hannover Police Unites Diverse Voices to Strengthen Democracy Through Policing
The Hannover Police Department launched its third annual 'Police Protection for Democracy' themed week on November 3, 2025. The initiative, 'A Democratic Party-Strong Police Network', aimed to bolster democratic resilience within law enforcement. Over 60 representatives from various sectors, including law enforcement, politics, academia, and civil society, attended the opening event.
Former Federal Minister Franz Müntefering delivered a keynote address on societal change and democratic culture. Following this, a panel discussion explored how societal dynamics influence policing. The week featured six themed workshops, moderated by 'democracy ambassadors' from the Hannover Police Department. These workshops delved into crucial topics such as police accountability, protecting civil liberties, combating racism and discrimination, and bolstering community-police relations to uphold democratic values. Local civil rights organizations, community groups focused on anti-discrimination, and democratic party advocacy entities also participated in these workshops. The event underscored the importance of collaboration between police and NGOs, institutional accountability, and civic education in policing.
The Hannover Police Department's 'Police Protection for Democracy' initiative successfully brought together diverse stakeholders to discuss and address key issues in policing and democracy. By fostering dialogue and cooperation, the event underscored the department's commitment to embodying democratic party values and strengthening community trust.
