Hanover-Hamburg rail passengers brace for months of delays and cancellations

Rail passengers travelling between Hanover and Hamburg will face ongoing service disruptions in the coming months. The delays stem from unfinished construction work, forcing operators to adjust timetables and cancel some services. The changes will take effect from May 1, with a phased introduction of adjusted regional services. Until then, alternative timetables will not be available until after Easter. Commuters should prepare for additional cancellations, particularly until mid-June.

The hourly connection between Hamburg and Lüneburg will remain in place, stopping at Winsen (Luhe) and Hamburg-Harburg as usual. A second regional train will also run hourly between Winsen and Hamburg, serving all intermediate stations. However, planned extra services between Lüneburg and Hamburg during peak hours have been suspended until June 13.

To ease pressure, additional trips will operate between Hamburg and Uelzen, with stops in Lüneburg. A two-hourly shuttle service between Lüneburg and Uelzen may also be introduced, though it will not provide direct links to Hamburg. Meanwhile, replacement buses between Lüneburg, Uelzen, Celle, and Langenhagen will largely run as scheduled, though minor tweaks could still occur. The disruptions mean passengers must check updated schedules before travelling. While some alternative options exist, many services will remain limited until at least mid-June. Operators have advised allowing extra time for journeys during this period.
