Hans Friderichs, Germany’s ‘grand figure’ of liberalism, dies at 94

Hans Friderichs, a leading figure in German politics and business, has died at the age of 94. Known as a 'grand figure' of the Mainz FDP, he was remembered as a liberal of the old school who shaped economic policy for decades.

Friderichs began his career in Rhineland-Palatinate, working as managing director of the Rheinhessen Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Bingen. In 1965, he entered the Bundestag and later became State Secretary for Agriculture and Viticulture in Mainz. His influence grew as he rose through the ranks of the Free Democratic Party (FDP).

Friderichs leaves behind a complex legacy, marked by both political achievement and controversy. His work in government, banking, and corporate governance shaped key institutions in Germany. He will be remembered as a dedicated liberal who remained engaged in public life until his death.
