More Black Storks in Lower Saxony - Harz Region Celebrates Record Black Stork Brood

The Harz region is celebrating a successful breeding season for black storks. A pair in the Harz Soest Valley has raised five young birds, the largest brood in the area since the species settled there four decades ago.

This year, the Lower Saxon Harz and the Harz foreland reported 24 young black storks, a significant increase from last year's 13. The rising numbers indicate a positive trend for the critically endangered species in the region.

The black stork's habitat is being improved through various conservation efforts. The Lower Saxony State Forestry Office is actively involved in renaturating moor forests, creating ponds, designating resting areas, and even building artificial nests to support the species. Two of the fledged young birds from this year's brood have been tracked to the Spanish Pyrenees and western Brittany in France, demonstrating the species' wide-ranging migration.

The successful breeding season and increasing numbers of young black storks in Lower Saxony are encouraging signs for the critically endangered species. Conservation efforts, such as those led by the Lower Saxony State Forestry Office, are proving effective in supporting the black stork population.
