Hasso Schmidt-Schmiedebach, pioneer of inclusion in Germany, dies at 80

Hasso Schmidt-Schmiedebach, a prominent figure in Germany’s inclusion movement, has passed away. For nearly five decades, he guided Lebenshilfe Rastatt/Murgtal, transforming it into a cornerstone of support for people with disabilities in the region.

Schmidt-Schmiedebach took charge of Lebenshilfe in 1976. Over time, he expanded the organisation into a vital force for inclusion, creating jobs, housing, and education for over 500 people with disabilities. His work ensured that inclusion became a natural part of daily life in the community.

The city of Rastatt has recognised Schmidt-Schmiedebach’s lifelong commitment to inclusion and participation. His legacy includes a network of opportunities that continue to benefit hundreds in the region. The impact of his work remains deeply embedded in the community.
