Hawaiʻi Diocese Names Two Bishop Candidates for May Election

The Diocese of Hawai'i has named two candidates for its next bishop. The Rev. Andrew J. Arakawa and The Rev. Timothy J. Yanni will stand in the upcoming election. A final decision will be made at a special meeting in May.

The two nominees bring different backgrounds to the role. Arakawa currently serves as canon for ministry formation in the same diocese. Yanni, meanwhile, leads as rector of Church of St. John the Baptist in Phoenix, Arizona.

The election process allows further nominations by petition until March 19. After this, the diocese will hold meetings with the candidates from April 23 to 26. The official vote takes place on May 16 during the diocesan convention. If approved, the consecration of the new bishop will follow on November 14.

The diocese will choose between Arakawa and Yanni—or another nominated candidate—at the May convention. The successful candidate will then become the sixth bishop of Hawai'i. Their consecration is planned for mid-November, pending final approval.
