Hawaii Governor Faces Tough Choice for Vacant House Seat in Sand Island District
Hawaii Governor Josh Green must soon choose a new representative for the Sand Island-Iwilei-Chinatown district. The seat was left vacant after former state Rep. Daniel Holt stepped down. Green now has 60 days to appoint a replacement from three shortlisted candidates.
The Hawaii Democratic Party put forward three names for the governor's consideration. Among them is Nadia Alves, currently the office manager for state Rep. Ikaika Hussey. Alves grew up in a large, working-class household and has been praised for her strong work ethic and sense of responsibility.
Ernest D. K. Caravalho also made the shortlist. He chairs the Downtown-Chinatown neighbourhood board, bringing local governance experience to the role. His background in community leadership could play a key part in the decision.
The third candidate is Michael 'Cov' Ratcliffe, a labour law attorney with a record of public service. He serves on the Kalihi-Palama Neighborhood Board and previously worked as a law clerk for the Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals. Ratcliffe also volunteers at the Legal Advocacy Clinic in Kokua Kalihi Valley, offering free legal support to residents.
Whoever is selected will take over representation for the Sand Island-Iwilei-Chinatown area in the state House. The governor's choice will shape local policy and community advocacy in the coming term.
Green's final decision must come within the next two months. The new representative will fill a crucial role in the Hawaii House, addressing the needs of the Sand Island-Iwilei-Chinatown district. The appointment will mark the next step in local political leadership for the area.
