HCM City’s Metro Line 2 breaks ground in early 2026 to ease traffic chaos
HCM City is set to commence construction on Metro Line 2 in January 2026, with the project estimated to cost VNĐ47.8 trillion (US$1.8 billion). The line, known as the Bến Thành-Tham Lương line, is expected to alleviate pressure on some of the city's busiest corridors and connect with Line 1 toward Suối Tiên.
The project is expected to take nearly five years to complete, with an estimated conclusion around 2030. Construction is set to take roughly 57 months, including 9km of underground tunnelling for the 11km line. Contractors aim to secure municipal approval in December 2025 and begin work on 15 January 2026.
MAUR has submitted technical and regulatory documents to the city government, with remaining procedures to be completed between November and December 2025. Phan Công Bằng, Director of the city's Urban Railway Management Board, will oversee work at the construction site. More than 70% of utility relocation work is already complete, with the goal to finish all clearance by the end of 2025. The city plans to spend about VNĐ10 trillion ($380 million) a year on the line.
The Bến Thành-Tham Lương line is expected to significantly enhance public transportation in HCM City. With construction scheduled to begin in January 2026, the city is on track to complete the project by 2030, providing much-needed relief to the city's busy corridors.
