Essen-Kettwig: Head-On Collision Leaves One Seriously Injured
Head-on crash in Essen leaves two drivers hospitalized after wrong-way collision
Yesterday evening (April 21), a 54-year-old man from Essen veered into oncoming traffic for reasons still under investigation while driving his VW Golf along August-Thyssen-Straße, colliding head-on with an approaching Škoda Fabia. The 54-year-old sustained serious injuries, while the 52-year-old female driver of the Škoda suffered minor injuries.
At around 7 p.m., the Essen resident was traveling in his VW Golf toward Kettwig when, between Essener Straße and "Am Stoot," he crossed into the opposite lane for as-yet-unknown reasons and struck the oncoming Škoda.
Emergency responders treated both drivers at the scene before transporting them to a hospital for further care. The Golf driver was seriously injured, while the Škoda driver, who suffered only minor injuries, was released from the hospital later that same day.
Both vehicles were totaled and impounded by authorities.
The local traffic police unit is investigating the circumstances that caused the 54-year-old to enter the wrong lane.
