Heavy Vehicles Barred From Bridge Repairs Starting Wednesday
A bridge over the Mittelland Canal on Hansestraße, leading out of Braunschweig, will undergo repairs starting Wednesday. Vehicles over 3.5 tons, including cars, will be barred from crossing the bridge during this time.
The bridge's weight limit has been reduced to 3.5 tons to lessen structural stress. Affected vehicles, such as cars and autotraders, must use an alternative route via Hansestraße, A391 motorway, A2, and return via Hansestraße toward Braunschweig.
The closure comes after cracks were discovered in the suspension of the bridge’s tied arches during inspections. Emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, will still be permitted temporary access. The bridge in the inbound direction toward the city remains unaffected.
An expedited tender process will be launched to address the bridge's defects before the end of the year. However, no information is currently available on the contractor assigned for the repairs.
The bridge closure is expected to cause some disruption for heavy vehicles, including cars and autotraders. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly. Repairs are set to begin soon, with the tender process underway to find a suitable contractor.
