Cross-border demand for Herrnhuter stars - Herrnhut Stars Shine Brighter as Demand Soars in Czech Republic

Herrnhut Stars, the iconic Christmas decorations, are seeing a surge in popularity—especially in the Czech Republic. The company, which has produced the stars since 2010, recently opened a new Decoration House and expanded its market presence. This year, sales are expected to rise, with over 850,000 stars set to be sold.

The tradition of Herrnhut Stars dates back to 1897, when commercial production began in Herrnhut under the Moravian Church. Since then, the stars have become a festive staple, with the company now employing around 230 people—nearly 80 percent of them women—working in two shifts to meet demand.

The manufacturer has expanded its reach in recent years. Since 2023, it has run a stall at the Christmas market in Liberec, Czech Republic, drawing more Czech visitors to its show workshop. The company also sells its stars at over 30 Christmas markets across Germany, helping to spread awareness of the product’s history and craftsmanship.

A new Decoration House opened in early November, featuring retail space, production areas, storage, and a workshop. The company continues to innovate, releasing a new plastic star colour each year since 2015, which has sparked a collecting trend. Mini stars have also been added to the range.

This year, Herrnhut Stars will light up Leipzig Central Station for the first time, with over 100 yellow stars installed. Sales projections for the current fiscal year stand at 850,000 stars—a 30,000 increase from the previous year.

The growing demand for Herrnhut Stars reflects their enduring appeal and the company’s expanding market efforts. With new installations, increased sales, and a stronger presence in the Czech Republic, the brand’s festive tradition continues to brighten more locations each year.
