Hesse plans partnership with region around Kyiv - Hesse and Kyiv Oblast forge partnership to boost Ukraine's EU ambitions
Hesse has announced a new regional partnership with Kyiv Oblast in Ukraine. The agreement aims to support Ukraine's path toward EU membership while strengthening ties in key areas. Around 100,000 Ukrainian refugees currently living in Hesse will also benefit from this collaboration.
Kyiv Oblast, one of Ukraine's 24 administrative regions, is home to roughly 1.8 million people and over 3,000 businesses. The partnership will focus on exchanges in youth programmes, education, science, and digitalisation. Economic cooperation will also play a major role.
Hesse already has experience in cross-border collaboration. The state maintains an existing exchange programme with Poland's Greater Poland Voivodeship, which will serve as a model for this new initiative. Additionally, Hesse has five other regional partnerships and multiple city twinning agreements with Ukrainian municipalities. The move comes as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian community in Hesse. Officials have emphasised that the partnership will help rebuild connections and foster long-term cooperation between the two regions.
The agreement expands Hesse's network of international partnerships. It will create opportunities for joint projects in education, research, and business. The collaboration also reinforces Hesse's commitment to supporting Ukraine during its recovery and EU accession process.
