How do I choose in the municipal elections? - Hesse holds pivotal local elections with record ballot sizes today
Local elections across Hesse are taking place today, with residents casting their votes for city councils and foreigners' advisory boards. The results will help shape community decisions, from transport links to leisure facilities. Many have already voted by post, but polling stations remain open until 6:00 p.m.
All German citizens and EU nationals living in Hesse can take part in today's municipal elections. Voters must bring official ID, such as a passport or national identity card, when visiting the polling station. Each person receives as many votes as there are seats available, with options to accumulate votes or split them across different candidates.
This year's ballot in Frankfurt is unusually large, measuring 1.44 metres by 60 centimetres. Turnout for local elections is often lower than for state or federal votes, but the choices made today will directly affect daily life. Alongside city councils, Hesse is electing foreigners' advisory councils (Ausländerbeiräte) for the tenth time. These councils, open to non-EU residents registered for at least three months, will be chosen in 89 municipalities. A total of 2,086 candidates are running for the 89 available positions.
The elections will determine who oversees local services and community projects in the coming years. With polling stations open until 6:00 p.m., residents still have time to vote. The newly elected representatives will take office after the results are confirmed.
