Hesse Honors 33 Volunteer Guides for Transforming Newcomers’ Lives
Thirty-three integration guides in Hesse have been recognised for their dedication to supporting newcomers. Minister Heike Hofmann honoured the volunteers at a ceremony held at Biebrich Palace. Among those celebrated was Nesreen Kabaha, who has worked in Rödermark since 2012.
The state has backed volunteer integration guides since 2005, with over 1,100 active members now involved in more than 50 projects across Hesse. Their work helps refugees and migrants navigate daily life, from official paperwork to social connections.
The volunteers provide practical, multilingual assistance to newcomers. They accompany people to government offices, help with translations, and organise community events. Nesreen Kabaha, for example, leads the 'International Breakfast' and 'Women’s Walk' initiatives in Rödermark. These activities encourage cultural exchange and build local networks.
Rödermark’s integration guides operate under the state’s WIR program, which stands for We for Integration in Rödermark. The broader WIR initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS), also supports refugees with disabilities transitioning from school to work. A second funding round for this part of the program is expected in early January 2026.
At the ceremony, Minister Hofmann thanked the awardees for their role in bridging gaps and helping newcomers settle in. She highlighted their contribution to making Hesse a more inclusive place. The state’s long-term commitment to the scheme dates back to 2005, with over a thousand volunteers now participating.

The recognition ceremony at Biebrich Palace underscores the importance of volunteer work in integration. With ongoing state support and new funding opportunities, the WIR program will continue to expand its reach. Newcomers in Hesse will keep receiving tailored assistance as they adjust to life in the region.
