Hesse's 2026 European Weeks to empower youth on democracy and unity

Hesse will host its annual European Weeks from April 30 to May 31, 2026. The event will focus on engaging young people in discussions about democracy and European unity. Schools across the region will play a central role in promoting political education and shared values. The European Weeks have long been a tradition in Hesse, aiming to strengthen civic engagement and cohesion within the EU. This year’s programme will include visits from politicians, debates, and interactive sessions designed to deepen students’ understanding of European issues.

One of the highlights is EU Project Day, where officials meet pupils to discuss the European Union’s work. Armin Schwarz, Hesse’s Education Minister, recently joined a student parliament session at Berkersheim Primary School in Frankfurt. He commended the pupils for their grasp of democratic principles and European solidarity. Berkersheim School introduced its student parliament in 2025 as part of an expanded class representative system. The initiative reflects Hesse’s broader effort to foster openness and dialogue through its 34 European Schools. These institutions serve as key hubs for political education, encouraging young people to engage with European values.

The 2026 European Weeks will bring together students, educators, and policymakers across Hesse. Through school-based events and public discussions, the programme seeks to build a stronger European identity. Organisers hope the initiative will inspire greater participation in democratic processes among young citizens.
