Children Build Village - Social Award for Five Projects - Hessian Social Prize 2025 Honors Five Initiatives Strengthening Democracy
The Hessian Social Prize 2025 has recognised five remarkable initiatives that strengthen democracy and participation across the region. The awards, totalling €30,000, were presented in the category 'Strengthening Democracy'.
The first-place prize of €12,000 went to the 'Self-Determined in the Hut Village: Democracy in Construction' project by Kassel’s Children and Youth Farm. This innovative programme teaches children aged six to 14 about democratic decision-making and conflict resolution by building houses from pallets.
Two projects received special recognition awards of €1,500 each. The first was 'Normalos – The Inclusion Reporters', while the second was the Intercultural Men’s Group of the Caritas Association in Gießen. The second-place prize of €9,000 was awarded to the Law Clinic at Frankfurt’s Goethe University for providing free legal advice to refugees and migrants. The third-place prize of €6,000 went to the Hesse State Youth Council for advocating for young people's rights in residential care facilities.
Heike Hofmann (SPD), Hesse’s Minister for Social Affairs, commended the initiatives, stating that 'our democracy has never been so threatened' and highlighting the importance of such projects. The Hessian Social Prize continues to foster and support initiatives that promote democratic values and participation.
