High-speed police chase in Bielefeld ends with driver's arrest after reckless escape
A 27-year-old driver led police on a high-speed chase through Bielefeld after being caught speeding. The incident began when a civilian patrol spotted a BMW 218i travelling at 90 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over and fled the scene.
The chase started on Artur-Ladebeck Street when patrol officers noticed the BMW exceeding the speed limit. They activated their blue lights and used the standard 'Police—Stop' hand signal to order the driver to halt. An officer in full uniform approached the car, but the driver suddenly accelerated and sped away.
The BMW continued at high speed, running a red light before turning right onto Obernstraße. Police pursued the vehicle along multiple streets and onto the OWD highway, where the driver broke through several roadblocks. Two officers suffered minor injuries during the pursuit. Eventually, the driver stopped at a red traffic light near Adenauerplatz but refused to surrender. The chase only ended when officers detained him on Waldbreede. The man later admitted seeing the signals to stop but claimed he feared being robbed. The driver, a Bielefeld resident of Turkish and Serbian-Montenegrin nationality, was already known to police. Authorities have now launched criminal proceedings against him for illegal street racing and multiple traffic violations.
The 27-year-old remains in custody following the incident. Police confirmed that no further suspects were involved in the chase. Investigations into the traffic offences and potential additional charges are ongoing.
