Hillside’s mayoral runoff set after Hyatt edges out Vertreese by ten votes

In Hillside's mayoral race, Andrea Hyatt, councilwoman from the 1st ward, secured a runoff spot against incumbent Dahlia Vertreese. Hyatt won by a narrow margin of ten votes. The runoff election is set for December 2. Three at-large township council seats will also head to a runoff.

Hyatt's victory came after a close race. With vote-by-mail ballots and provisionals tallied, Vertreese gained 43 votes, while Hyatt picked up 28 votes. This brought Hyatt's total to 2,106 votes, trailing Vertreese's 2,426 votes. In the 2nd ward council seat special election, Angela Garretson defeated Stephen Wilson by sixteen votes.

Evelyn Williams, a former mayor and Union County Board of Commissioners member, previously won the 2nd Ward special election in November 2021. Garretson, who was appointed in January and ran with Epps, will now face Wilson again in the runoff for the 2nd ward seat.

The runoff elections in Hillside are shaping up to be close contests. Hyatt and Vertreese will face off for the mayoral seat, while Garretson and Wilson will compete for the 2nd ward council seat. The results of these races will significantly impact Hillside's future leadership.
