Historic Lutheran Church in Höhscheid to Stop Services in 2030, Focuses on Cultural Role
The Evangelical Lutheran Church congregation in Höhscheid has decided to cease using its historic church for services from 2030 onwards, citing financial constraints. The Lutheran Church Building Association, while regretting the decision, has committed to a constructive dialogue with the congregation and aims to preserve the building's significance as a cultural hub.
The maintenance costs of the listed church have risen sharply, surpassing the congregation's long-term financial capabilities. Despite this setback, both the congregation and the association are committed to developing sustainable perspectives for the church's future together. The association will continue to organise concerts, readings, cultural events, and open church tours to ensure the building remains an open house for culture, music, and encounter.
In the past three decades, the association has successfully completed numerous projects through voluntary work and donations, amounting to over one million euros. The famous verse 'A Mighty Fortress is Our God' stands at the entrance of the church, serving as a testament to its rich history and cultural significance. The decision to stop using the church for services was made by the consistory of the Evangelical Lutheran Church congregation on October 9th.
While the Lutheran Church in Höhscheid will no longer serve as a place of worship from 2030, it will continue to function as a place of encounter, culture, and music. The Lutheran Church Building Association remains dedicated to preserving the historic building and strengthening its role as a cultural landmark, ensuring its legacy endures for future generations.
