The Tu-154: A Cold War Icon
One of Tupolev's most notable contributions to the aviation industry is the Tupolev Tu-154. First flying in 1968 and entering service in the early 1970s, the Tu-154 became the Soviet Union's most widely used medium-range airliner during the Cold War. With a rugged design adapted to less-developed airport infrastructure, the Tu-154 enabled widespread domestic and international air travel. The Tupolev Tu-204, a more modern twin-engine airliner in the same family, began production later, with its first flight in 1989 and production starting in the 1990s. Serving as a replacement for older Soviet aircraft including the Tu-154, the Tu-204 introduced improvements such as better fuel efficiency, modern avionics, and compliance with international noise and emission standards. The Tupolev Tu-95, a large, four-engine turboprop-powered strategic bomber and missile platform, entered service with the Soviet Air Forces in 1956 and is expected to serve the Russian Aerospace Forces until at least 2040.
The Tupolev Tu-28/Tu-128 "Fiddler", a long-range interceptor plane, made its first flight on March 18, 1961, and was produced until 1990, with a total of 198 units built. The Tu-28/Tu-128 had its introduction in 1964. During World War 2, Tupolev manufactured many military aircraft, including the Tu-2 and Tu-16 bombers.

Today, Tupolev continues to be a successful aircraft manufacturer, producing both commercial airliners and military aircraft. The Tupolev Tu-95, first flown in 1952, and the Tupolev Tu-204, first flown in 1989, are testament to the company's enduring legacy in the aviation industry.
