Hit-and-run cyclist crash in Essen sparks police manhunt for fleeing driver
A cyclist was knocked off his bike in Essen after a car door was opened in his path. The collision happened on Monday, March 30, near the intersection of Berliner Straße and Kölner Straße. The rider suffered minor injuries, but the driver who caused the crash fled the scene. The 41-year-old cyclist, a local resident, was travelling along Berliner Straße when a parked car's door suddenly opened. The impact sent him falling to the ground, and his bicycle slid into oncoming traffic. It then sideswiped a Volkswagen Golf driven by a 21-year-old man from Bonn.
The cyclist was injured but did not require hospital treatment. Meanwhile, the driver responsible for opening the door left without stopping. Police described the suspect as a man aged 40 to 50, with dark hair and a southern European or Mediterranean appearance. He was last seen driving a dark-coloured car.
Authorities are now asking for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who saw the incident or has information about the fleeing driver is urged to contact Essen police. The search for the driver continues as police piece together details of the crash. The incident adds to ongoing concerns about road safety in Essen, where traffic congestion and construction delays remain common. As of April 3, 2026, major routes like the A40 still face moderate hold-ups, mirroring patterns seen in other German cities.
