Ho Chi Minh City holds historic 2026 elections with record voter turnout
Ho Chi Minh City held its elections for the 16th National Assembly and local councils on March 15, 2026. Over 9.6 million voters took part in the process, which began with a flag salute and national anthem at 7am. Polling stations across the city were set up to ensure smooth voting for residents and workers alike.
The city was divided into 13 National Assembly constituencies, where voters chose 38 deputies from 64 candidates. For the local People's Council elections, 42 constituencies selected 125 deputies from 208 contenders. At the commune level, 1,306 constituencies elected 4,236 deputies to commune-level councils.
Voting sites were decorated with banners, flags, and candidate profiles to guide voters. Public servants and local youth volunteers provided instructions to maintain order. Election teams also visited Military Hospital 175 and other locations to ensure everyone could cast their ballots. Nguyễn Hoàng Giang, a first-time voter, shared his excitement about participating in the election. Meanwhile, People's Artist Đặng Thuý My Uyên, director of 5B Small Theatre, allowed her staff and actors to vote in their hometowns to accommodate their schedules.
The election saw widespread participation across HCM City, with polling stations operating efficiently. Voters selected representatives for both national and local councils, completing the democratic process. Officials confirmed that the voting proceeded without major disruptions.
