Houseboat sinks in Mainz port, sparking gasoline leak and rescue operation
A houseboat began sinking in Mainz's industrial port on Monday, leaking gasoline into the water. Firefighters launched a four-hour rescue operation to stabilise the vessel and prevent further pollution. The incident started when the houseboat took on water and developed a gasoline leak. This created an oil slick on the surface, prompting an emergency response. Sixteen firefighters arrived with five vehicles and a fireboat to secure the scene.
A crane lifted the damaged boat from the water while crews pumped out the remaining fuel. The recovered gasoline-water mixture was stored in intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) for safe disposal. Authorities have yet to determine why the vessel suddenly began sinking. The boat's owner must now arrange for the proper disposal of both the IBCs and the houseboat. Investigations into the cause of the sinking are ongoing. The operation successfully contained the leak and removed the vessel from the water.
