Houston deputy indicted for murder after fatal gas station shooting

A Harris County deputy has been indicted for murder after fatally shooting a man outside a Houston gas station last year. Aileen Jimenez Barboza, a 15-year veteran of the sheriff's office, now faces charges over the death of 36-year-old Levincer Swanson in February 2025.

Her bond was set at $50,000 following the indictment announced on Thursday.

The incident began when Barboza responded to reports of erratic behaviour at a local petrol station. Swanson initially followed deputies' instructions but then resisted and attempted to disarm one of them. Barboza fired her weapon twice, killing him.

An Internal Affairs investigation later found policy violations in her actions. She had been on administrative leave since the shooting. This week, officials decided to terminate her employment. No public records or verified details about Swanson, his death, or any reactions from civil rights groups or Houston authorities have surfaced as of March 2026.

Barboza now awaits further legal proceedings after her indictment. The case marks the end of her 15-year career with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The outcome of the trial will determine any additional consequences she may face.
