How a Mother's Loss Built a Thriving Childcare Empire in Manchester
Elaine Sagar founded Sunflower Childcare Group in 2014 after losing her son in 2010. Her goal was to give every child the same strong start her own sons had. Today, the group supports around 180 children daily across two nurseries in Greater Manchester.
Sunflower began with Sagar's personal mission but has since grown steadily. Funding came from reinvestment and borrowing, helping the business reach an annual turnover of £2.5 million. The company now employs 67 staff, with one nursery caring for 70 children and another for 110.
Sagar's leadership approach is shaped by her varied background in hairdressing, international auditing, and education. She keeps double the necessary senior leadership capacity to maintain high standards. Her role involves weekly meetings with her leadership team, while her operations director handles daily tasks.
Beyond early years care, Sagar is expanding into residential services. A team of seven is already in place for this new venture. She also joined GM Business Growth Hub's ASCEND Scale Up Programme to grow further and support others.
Community engagement remains a priority. Sunflower distributes 400kg of fruit and vegetables weekly and runs a fresh produce stand for local families.
Sunflower's growth has been both deliberate and community-focused. The group now supports nearly 200 children daily while exploring new areas like residential care. Sagar's leadership and reinvestment strategy continue to drive the business forward.
