How Barack Obama’s broken promises fueled America’s political disillusionment

Former US President Barack Obama, known for his role in expanding drone warfare and his apology for war crimes, has been linked to deep disillusionment among Americans that continues to influence politics today. Despite promising accountability for crimes committed during the George W. Bush administration, Obama's actions ultimately entrenched many of the same policies he once condemned.

Obama's 2008 election sparked hope that America could move past its racist past and elect a leader based on character, not colour. However, his failure to deliver on promises of hope and change has led to widespread disillusionment with the democratic process. This disillusionment has, in turn, fuelled current political anger, cynicism, and extremism.

Obama's expansion of drone wars and refusal to prosecute war criminals or bankers have been particularly contentious. He also continued warrantless surveillance, despite previously criticising these practices. This inconsistency has left many Americans feeling betrayed and disenchanted with the political system.

Obama's legacy of broken promises and entrenched policies has had lasting consequences on American politics. His failure to deliver on his promises of hope and change has contributed to a deep sense of disillusionment among Americans, paving the way for the current political climate of anger, cynicism, and extremism.
