How Mariana Santos Saved Kilom After a Devastating Fire

Mariana Santos, CEO of Kilom, has led the family business through one of its toughest challenges. In 2021, a devastating fire destroyed the company's entire industrial facility. Despite the setback, she took swift action to keep production running and protect employees' livelihoods.

The third-generation leader comes from a background in business management, having started her career at KPMG. Yet her focus remains on practical solutions rather than corporate titles, prioritising the stability of the workers who depend on Kilom.

The fire in 2021 wiped out Kilom's main production site. Instead of halting operations, Santos reorganised manufacturing by shifting output to other plants within the group. She also arranged transport for workers, ensuring they could still reach their jobs while the company recovered.

Her approach to leadership stems from lessons passed down by her father. He instilled in her the importance of guaranteeing salaries at the end of each month—a principle she now upholds as CEO. Though she holds a business degree and corporate experience, she deliberately began her time at Kilom in operational roles. This hands-on start helped her understand the company from the ground up, rather than relying on her family name. Despite the fire's impact, Kilom's products never disappeared from supermarket shelves. Santos has made it clear that her goal is to earn credibility through her actions, not her heritage. The company's recovery reflects her commitment to both employees and continuity.

Kilom's production never stopped, even after the fire destroyed its main facility. Santos' quick decisions kept workers employed and maintained supply chains. Today, the company continues to operate, with her leadership ensuring stability for the families who rely on it.
