How One Leader Transformed Ottawa’s Approach to Homelessness and Mental Health

Catharine Vandelinde, a seasoned professional with nearly nine years at the helm of Options Housing, has dedicated her career to mental health and community services. Known for her approachable and empathetic leadership, Vandelinde has transformed Options Housing into a beacon of supportive care for Ottawa's homeless population.

Vandelinde's journey began with a BA in Psychology from Carleton University and a certificate in harm reduction from York University. She honed her skills at CAMH and Somerset West Community Health Centre before joining Options Housing as executive director.

Under her guidance, Options Housing provides supportive housing to 128 people in four downtown units, offering meals, financial assistance, and mental health support. The organization also extends its reach to over 1,000 tenants in Ottawa Community Housing through crisis intervention and counselling services.

Vandelinde's leadership style, praised as wise, thoughtful, and kind, has fostered a democratic work environment at Options Housing. She has overseen various aspects of the organization, including human resources, finance, strategy, governance, and frontline response. Her impact was recognised during her tenure as the chair of the Alliance to End Homelessness in Ottawa.
