How One Woman Turned a Blueberry Farm into an Organic Powerhouse
Meet Sylke Herse, the driving force behind Bickbeerenhof, a pioneering organic blueberry farm nestled in Brokeloh. With a passion for sustainable cultivation and a commitment to educating visitors, Herse has transformed the family business into a thriving destination.
Bickbeerenhof's story began in 1968 when the first blueberry fields were established on the farm's humus-rich soil, proving ideal for permanent cultivation. Sylke Herse, who grew up on the farm, joined the business in her early twenties and has since steered it towards organic practices, now cultivating organic blueberries across 22.5 hectares.
The farm's success is not just about organic blueberries; it's about community and sustainability. Herse's team processes and packages the fruit on-site, minimizing losses and maximizing freshness. They also ship organic blueberry packages directly to consumers through Crowdfarming, reducing reliance on retail chains. The farm's full-service restaurant, seating up to 400 guests, serves organic blueberry dishes and sells packaged organic products in the farm shop. To accommodate group visitors, Bickbeerenhof offers a designated bus parking area.
Herse's dedication to educating visitors about organic blueberry cultivation and its challenges has attracted around 70,000 visitors annually during the short season from May to September.
Under Sylke Herse's leadership, Bickbeerenhof has evolved into a sustainable, community-focused enterprise. From its organic blueberry cultivation to its direct-to-consumer shipping and on-site dining, the farm offers a unique experience that educates and delights visitors. With Herse at the helm, Bickbeerenhof continues to flourish, proving that organic farming can be both profitable and environmentally responsible.
