How the membership numbers of the churches have developed - How the membership numbers of the churches have developed
Church membership in Hesse has fallen again in 2024. Both Catholic and Protestant denominations reported fewer followers by the end of the year. The trend continues a steady decline across the region’s major Christian groups.
The Catholic Church in Hesse saw its numbers drop to just under 1.16 million members. This marks a decrease from 1.2 million in 2023. The decline reflects a broader pattern of shrinking congregations.
The Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau (EKHN) also lost around 50,000 members over the same period. By December 2024, its total stood at 1,269,605. Another Protestant body, the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck, recorded a 3.2 percent fall, leaving it with roughly 687,526 adherents.
Hesse’s total population remains around 6.4 million. Despite this, neither church has introduced new measures to reverse the downward trend in membership.
The latest figures confirm a persistent drop in church affiliation across Hesse. Catholic and Protestant leaders face ongoing challenges in retaining members. No recent initiatives to boost numbers have been reported.
