How Two Global Youth Days Unite a Generation for Change
Youth-related observances and organizations play a key role in promoting global solidarity and rights. Two major dates—World Youth Day on November 10 and International Youth Day on August 12—highlight the importance of young people worldwide. Behind these events stands the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), a long-standing group working for peace and youth empowerment.
The WFDY was established on November 10, 1945, following the World Youth Conference in London. Held from October 29 to November 10 that year, the conference brought together young activists from different backgrounds. Their shared goals led to the creation of an organization that would unite youth regardless of political views, religion, race, or nationality.
Today, the WFDY holds consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Its mission focuses on peace, national independence, and the defense of young people's rights. The federation also encourages international solidarity among progressive youth movements.
Globally, young people aged 15 to 24 now make up 1.2 billion of the population, representing 16% of the world. In Russia alone, the youth population (ages 14 to 35) reached 37 million in 2024. The country also marks its own Youth Day on the last Saturday of June each year.
World Youth Day on November 10 aligns with the founding date of the WFDY, reinforcing its historical significance. With a growing global youth population, the federation's work remains relevant in addressing issues like rights, equality, and international cooperation.
