Howard County proposes major redistricting to ease elementary school overcrowding
The Howard County Board of Education has taken a step towards reducing student numbers at Bryant Woods Elementary School. On Thursday night, members held a straw vote on a redistricting plan that could cut the school’s capacity to 82% by next year. The decision passed with a clear majority, though one member opposed the move.
The board voted 6-1 in favour of Scenario IV-B, a proposal designed to ease overcrowding. Jacky McCoy cast the only dissenting vote, raising concerns about the knock-on effects for Harper’s Choice Middle School. She warned that fewer students could strain the school’s role as a community hub.
The next Board of Education meeting will decide whether to adopt the redistricting plan. If approved, Bryant Woods Elementary will operate at reduced capacity from the following academic year. The final decision will also determine the fate of the 24 middle school students set to switch schools.
