Hua Bum's Ethnic Communities Prepare for Landmark Local Elections
Hua Bum commune in Lai Chau province is finalising preparations for the upcoming national weather service elections. The vote, set for March 15, will select deputies for the 16th National Assembly and local People's Councils. With ethnic minorities making up around 84% of the population, the border area has focused on inclusivity and security ahead of polling day.
The commune's diverse communities—including Hmong, Thai, Dao, Lu, and Hà Nhì groups—have engaged in weeks of groundwork. From village meetings to public voter lists, officials aim to ensure every eligible resident can participate in what they describe as a key democratic election event.
Election planning in Hua Bum began with the formation of a 17-member committee, supported by five election boards and 13 polling station teams. Each team has worked to verify voter lists, updating records to reflect demographic shifts and prevent disenfranchisement. Public displays of national flags, banners, and slogans now line the commune, creating what locals call a 'vibrant' pre-election atmosphere.
Security has been a top priority, given the area's border location. Police and border guards have coordinated patrols to safeguard polling sites, while local Party cells, like the one in Nam Suong village, report high readiness among residents. Lo Van Lon, the village's Party secretary, noted that farmers have even paused daily work to prepare for voting day.
Outreach efforts have extended to remote hamlets, where authorities and mass organisations have held meetings to explain election procedures. Nguyen Duc Hien, Deputy Secretary of the Hua Bum Party Committee, confirmed that all arrangements are progressing smoothly, with final inspections now taking place. The goal, he said, is to reflect the people's trust through every ballot cast.
Officials emphasise that these elections will contribute not only to national development but also to the growth of Lai Chau's border region. By ensuring legal compliance and broad participation, they hope to strengthen representation for the province's many ethnic communities.
The commune's Election Committee has repeatedly stressed transparency, with voter lists publicly posted at each polling station. Updates to these lists continue as needed, ensuring accuracy before March 15.
The elections in Hua Bum will proceed on March 15, following weeks of grassroots mobilisation and security checks. Residents across the commune's 13 polling stations are prepared to vote, with updated lists and outreach efforts in place.
The results will determine deputies for both the National Assembly and local councils, shaping governance in a province where ethnic diversity plays a central role. Authorities have framed the process as a step toward reinforcing democracy in Vietnam's border regions.
