800 People Demonstrate in Solidarity with Kurds - Hundreds protest Syrian government’s crackdown on Kurdish self-rule
Around 800 protesters gathered in Saarbrücken over the weekend to condemn recent attacks on Kurdish self-administration in northern Syria. The demonstration, led by local Kurdish communities and supported by various political parties, remained peaceful, with no incidents reported. Demonstrators carried signs and chanted slogans like ‘Stop the massacre’ and ‘Defend Kurdistan’. Their demands focused on ending what they described as a brutal crackdown in Kurdish-majority areas by the interim government's military campaigns.
Clashes have escalated in northern Syria for weeks, as government forces push to take control of Kurdish neighbourhoods in Aleppo. The Syrian Transitional Government, which took power after Assad's fall in December 2024, is now attempting to seize Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh. The conflict stems from long-standing disputes over how Kurdish administrations should fit into Syria's state structure. Protesters in Saarbrücken called for international intervention to halt the violence, highlighting growing tensions between Kurdish forces and the interim government's military campaigns.
The demonstration in Saarbrücken ended without disruption. Organisers stressed the need for urgent action to protect Kurdish communities in Syria. Meanwhile, fighting in Aleppo's Kurdish districts continues as government forces push for control.
