Hundreds rally against AfD's Populist Ash Wednesday in Overath's cultural clash
Over 300 people gathered outside Overath's Kulturbahnhof on Friday to protest against an AfD event taking place inside. The demonstration was organised as a deliberate contrast to the party's indoor gathering, which they titled Populist Ash Wednesday. Participants called for a more open, diverse, and humane society while the AfD hosted its annual Ascherfreitag (Ash Friday) event with speeches and humour.
The AfD's Ascherfreitag event featured four speakers addressing what the party described as 'everyday madness in Germany' from their perspective. Dr. Frank Schnaack, Sven Tritschler (MdL), Christian Zaum (MdB), and Dr. Verena Wester took the stage, using satire to discuss political issues. Meanwhile, outside, the protest drew a mixed crowd, including families, activists, and local residents of all ages.
The trio *The Flying Tornados* performed protest songs, adding energy to the demonstration. Roland Vossebrecker, representing *Bergisch Gladbach for Democracy and Diversity*, spoke directly to AfD voters, urging reflection on the party's policies. A spokesperson for the *Rhein-Berg Action Network for Democracy and Against Right-Wing Extremism* later praised the peaceful nature of the gathering. Organisers emphasised that the event was not just a protest but a celebration of democratic values. The contrast between the two gatherings—one indoors with political speeches, the other outside with music and calls for solidarity—highlighted the deep divisions in local political discourse.
The demonstration ended without incident, reinforcing its message of unity against right-wing extremism. Inside, the AfD's event proceeded as planned, with its speakers focusing on their party's viewpoints. The day's events in Overath underscored the ongoing tension between political movements in the region.
