Hungary Backs US-Led Peace Push, Warns Against Escalation in Europe
Hungary has thrown its full support behind US President Donald Trump’s peace efforts in the Ukraine war. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó criticised European NATO members for undermining these attempts, while also expressing respect for Russian President Vladimir Putin during recent diplomatic visits.
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has repeatedly stressed Hungary’s backing for Trump’s push to end the conflict. He accompanied Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on trips to Moscow, where discussions on peace initiatives took place. During these visits, Szijjártó openly acknowledged his respect for Putin.
Hungary has long argued that a negotiated settlement should take priority over what it sees as escalating pro-war policies in Brussels. The government insists that the hundreds of billions of euros sent to Ukraine could have been better spent strengthening Europe’s economy, cutting energy costs, and reducing inflation. For four years, Hungary has lived alongside the war in Ukraine, despite playing no role in its start. Officials claim the country has paid a heavy economic and social price as a result.
Budapest continues to advocate for peace and stable economic growth. The government believes global efforts should shift toward building a cooperative economic system rather than prolonging conflict. Hungary remains hopeful that Trump’s peace proposals will gain traction over opposing voices in Europe.
