Gemeindetag confirms demand for more tax money - Hunter Calls for Fundamental Municipal Finance Reforms Beyond Billion-Euro Package
Hunter, the Town Hall President, has welcomed the billion-euro package but insists it's not a complete solution. He calls for fundamental reforms in municipal finances, echoing the concerns of 81.5 percent of southwest municipalities surveyed.
The recent billion-euro package, acknowledged by Hunter, is seen as a significant step but not a panacea. Around 90 percent of southwest municipalities have already depleted their financial reserves, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
A survey by the Baden-Württemberg Town Hall Association revealed that strengthening municipal finances is the top priority for the new federal government, with 81.5 percent of respondents agreeing. Hunter, the Federal Minister responsible for municipal finances, Lars Klingbeil, and Town Hall President Steffen Hunter are among those advocating for this.
Hunter proposes several measures to address the issue. He suggests reconsidering the distribution of tax revenues and increasing the municipalities' share. Additionally, he floats the idea of reducing subsidies for services like youth welfare, integration assistance, and daycare, and involving parents more in co-financing these services.
