Hydrogen garbage truck fire disrupts waste collection in Freiburg's Vauban district

A hydrogen-powered garbage truck caught fire in Freiburg's Vauban district on March 31, 2026. The blaze began shortly after 8:17 a.m., with flames spreading from the vehicle's paper waste load onto the street. Emergency services were alerted immediately as the situation escalated. The fire broke out while the truck was collecting paper waste. Before firefighters arrived, burning debris spilled onto the road, creating additional hazards. Crews responded quickly, deploying 14 firefighters across four vehicles to tackle the blaze.

By around 10:37 a.m., the fire was under control. The vehicle itself remained intact, but the paper waste suffered significant damage. Firefighters spent several more hours cooling hotspots to prevent reignition. Investigators are still examining the cause of the fire and assessing the full extent of the damage. Despite this incident, no other fires involving hydrogen-powered waste trucks have been recorded in Germany since 2020.

The fire disrupted local waste collection but caused no injuries. Authorities continue to probe how the blaze started and whether any safety measures need review. The truck's hydrogen system was not reported as a factor in the incident.
