Hydrogen-Powered Engine Testing Initiated by Airbus

Airbus, a leading aircraft manufacturer, has taken a significant step towards achieving zero-emission aviation by initiating trials for hydrogen-powered aircraft engines. The trials, which were announced on 22 February 2022, are being carried out within the framework of the ZEROe concept, a collaborative effort between American and European entities to tackle the challenging target of zero-emission aviation.

The trials will be performed on an A380 type aircraft, with the hydrogen engine positioned near the tail section of the aircraft. The engine for the trials will be produced within the ZEROe project, and it will be tested on the ground by CFM International before test flights.

The hydrogen-powered aircraft trials are part of Airbus's Zero Emission vision, a long-term goal aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of air travel. The aircraft will contain fuel tanks with liquid hydrogen, a clean and abundant energy source that, when burned, produces only water vapour and nitrogen as exhaust.

The ZEROe concept, introduced publicly in September 2020, marks a significant milestone in Airbus's commitment to sustainable aviation. The environmentally friendly engines planned for service in 2035 are expected to play a crucial role in this vision.

However, it's important to note that currently, there are no specific plans or announcements regarding hydrogen-powered A380 flights. Airbus has recently pushed back its ZEROe timeline and ditched plans for A380 fuel cell flight tests, according to recent updates. Airbus is focusing on developing hydrogen-powered aircraft, with plans to launch a first commercial hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2040–2045.

Despite this, the hydrogen engine trials are an important step towards Airbus's Zero Emission vision and zero-emission aviation as a whole. The trials will provide valuable insights into the feasibility and performance of hydrogen-powered aircraft engines, paving the way for a greener future in air travel.
