Former Airport Tempelhof Gets Its Sign Back - Iconic 'Berlin - Templehof' Sign to Be Relit This Week
The iconic 'Berlin - Templehof' sign, once adorning the roof of the former Tempelhof Airport, is set to be relit by the end of the week. The sign, measuring 42 meters in length with letters two meters high, has undergone a €210,000 restoration. It was removed during the ongoing roof renovation project that began in October 2021.
The restoration process involved replacing rusted metal parts and renewing weathered paint. The sign is illuminated by 213 integrated neon tubes, ensuring it will once again light up the night sky above Tempelhofer Field. The roof renovation, which began in 2021, is expected to be completed in 2027 at an estimated cost of €32 million.
The relighting of the 'Berlin - Templehof' sign marks a significant milestone in the ongoing renovation of the former airport. It serves as a reminder of the city's history and will continue to be a beloved landmark for Berliners and visitors alike.
