Iconic Hamburg Cheese Shop 'Fromage & Bistro' Reopens After Insolvency
Despite the recent reopening, the insolvency of 'Fromage & Bistro' in Hamburg's Alsterhaus highlights the ongoing pressure faced by renowned businesses in the city. The case comes amidst persistently high insolvency numbers in the first half of 2025.
The insolvency of 'Fromage & Bistro' was partly triggered by a significant claim default, stemming from the insolvency of the KaDeWe group. The popular cheese shop, founded in 1986 by Hannelore Nägele and long considered one of Hamburg's best cheese addresses, was forced to close in August. Four employees were affected by the insolvency.
The store is set to reopen on October 6, under new ownership. Christopher Teager, an 'expert in enjoyment', has taken over the reins. Teager's appointment was first reported in 2021 as the successor to the previous establishment. Despite the change, the range of fine cheese varieties and wines will remain the same.
The reopening of 'Fromage & Bistro' brings a glimmer of hope amidst the challenging business landscape in Hamburg. Despite the insolvency, the new owner promises to maintain the store's reputation as a premier cheese destination, preserving the legacy established by its founder.
